Joyce Carol Oates is a chameleon. The voice is very accurate - in some ways it reminds me more of Tom Wolfe than of James Joyce, whose novel "Ulysses" Oates pays homage to - but it doesn't seem as if the question has been asked: Is this something anyone actually wants to read? The character Corky is absolutely uncompelling, and after such a good opening.

Even though I disliked the protagonist, Corky, I got so caught up in his life. Great read!
