The story starts out pretty good, but then something just didn't make sense to me. The escaped convict calls his sister's phone (suspecting the police tapped it and are listening in) and tells his sister he wants to turn himself in but wants to meet his lawyer first at a disclosed location later that night. He gives her the lawyer's name and phone number FOR HER to call the lawyer, then hangs up. She calls the lawyer to relay the information.

This is the convict's plan to lead the police on a wild goose chase. But why didn't the police who are listening in on the tapped call, the detectives working the case, and the lead detective not wondering why the convict didn't just call the lawyer himself since he has a phone and the lawyer's number? This should have raised their suspicion.

The down-on-her-luck sister, who's also a single mother, does get a Christmas surprise at the end though.

I read Mary Higgins Clark's book because they are always suspenseful and keeps your attention right to the end. This book had the suspense, but it also made you want to believe in miracles. A really nice story that is well worth being read.

Very short, but very good. 8 of 10 for me.
