A great book that tells a story using very few words. The kids at storytime loved this book - they read along and made predictions. Very sweet.

Stick! is a brand new picture book by author Andy Pritchett that just flew by me today and it is one to remember. It is minimalist in its artwork and story but packs a big message and loads of giggles. Dog finds a stick. The perfect stick. A stick that must be played with immediately. What goes best with a stick? Friends! Dog attempts to engage the enthusiasm of a bunch of other animals with the repeated offer of Stick? But crushingly everyone has their own special interests (grass, a worm, mud) and dog despairs of ever finding a friend to go along with his stick so he throws it away and mopes dramatically. But then along comes another puppy who agrees that sticks are the best thing ever and their enthusiasm spreads until there is a whole group of friends playing with the stick.
Bright, bold background colors highlight the action on each page and even with very few words (mainly "stick") you know exactly what everyone is thinking because the pictures speak volumes. This would be great for a story time about friendship or dogs at their doggiest. Andy Pritchett is definitely one to watch.

Worked very well at toddler time. I had the children say the word stick with me.

This book wasn't what I expected at all. Good for a storytime, however it would be received only the way it was told.

What is fun to one person, is not always fun to another, but playing together is always pleasant. To Dog, his favourite toy is his stick, a word which he repeats over and over. With each passing page, Dog meets a new animal, who enjoys their own activities. Like the words, the colours are simple, with solid backgrounds surrounding simply designed creatures. These backgrounds change for each animal, or to express certain feelings, like Dog's gloom. Everything about this book aims for the minimal, but to toddlers it will have a good amount of impact.
