wow.......WOOOOOWWWW! What can I honestly say about this book without drowning in my own saliva from gushing? This series has some of the best world building, writing, plot development, pacing, and characterization I have ever read in a fantasy novel. I have read and re-read all the novels in ASOIAF, Frank Herbert's Dune, and The Emperor's Blades. Mage's Blood has a style that is both reminiscent of those aforementioned titles while still retaining it's unique identity.
-The world building is soooo amazing I found myself frequently flipping back to the maps whenever a new location was established. The transition was also well done i.e the locations differ enough that they don't feel copy-pasted.
-Characters are so multifaceted. The perfect balance of ambiguous and absolutist personas here. You feel engaged in their stories, arcs and development. Also, female characters are done in a way that doesn't feel pandering i.e NO MARY-SUES!
-Writing is also quite good. The dialogue is definitely lifted from many present day cultures but that helps to show how creative David Hair is.
-Pacing and plot development are to be highly commended. The initial starts of the story and the individual characters' arcs are handled in a proper chronological order so as to not feel rushed or underdeveloped. Even the conclusion is all encompassing and leaves no lose ends and sets up the next book in the series!
N.B: The magic system in this story is a great balance of both soft and hard magic systems. It is consistent and very believable.
In summary, what a fantastic book. Definitely worth reading for any fan of adult fantasy (esp ASOIAF)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characterizations, plot, magic system and world building were all excellent. It is a very complex, multi-character story that spans several continents. I recommend the library purchase the fourth and final book of the Moontide Quartet series, Ascendant's Rite. I am currently reading the succeeding series, the Sunsurge Quartet. It is also great so far, and I have not had any problem purchasing the books in Canada.
spoiler alert!!! While this was an excellent book the sequel is only being released in England and our Library system won't buy it...(sigh)...just so you know.
