A good movie but Best Movie of the Year? I don't think so. I will say that the lady who played Chiron's mother deserved a Best Supporting Actress nomination and I hope she got one.

This movie won the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture in 2017, and it's very clear why. The film beautifully depicts the triumph of resiliency over heartbreak in this exploration of a young African-American boy challenged and tested in every aspect of his life - family, classmates, neighborhood. A *must-see* film that you won't easily forget.

This is a movie which show the reality of black youth in America... Survival is the essence of life.. The characteristic of non speaking or speaking in an African dialogue is dead on the truth. Trust is so hard to find... the performance by Mahershala Ali keeps consistent with how to raise or teach black youth in this environment. Something as simple as moonlight in the water ..significant because i was an act of kindness.. Kids never forget anything which brought them kindness or the people who did it.

I did not expect to be entertained with this award winning film, however I did not expect to be so assaulted or wounded with the language. Give me 4 letter words over the big n - the worst word in any language. Definitely a perspective on the lives of millions of people almost living within touching range and one I struggle to understand despite my proximity.

For me this was somewhat disappointing, slow, painful. The performance by Mahershala Ali was persuasive & fascinating. His absence in the 2nd stage was confusing, hardly any explanation, just gone. His character in Hidden Figures was a polar opposite. The female actors, Monae, was brief & Harris was excellent.

The struggle of Chiron must be endured by countless young men, regardless of skin color. His abandonment & need for love was palpable.

I loved the actors and the storyline. I like the transition from adolescence to teens, but not like the "adult" phase. It was like it was an afterthought of the movie and I was quite disappointed. There was something lackluster about this movie and I just cant put my finger on it. Maybe it was the directing, maybe it was something else. Overall, I enjoyed this.

This is a film to watch again if I am ever feeling sorry for myself. A beautiful, thought-provoking story that deepens my gratitude for kindness. As blue as I get, I may never be as blue as that boy in the moonlight.

Something different - a film about people of a very different social-economic background - I doubt that I would ever run into them and get to know them - which is a wonderful thing about great films - you get to live other folks lives, and perhaps understand a little more what they go though.

I would call this an art film. Despite Brad Pitt executive producing it, this film is a raw beautiful masterpiece that benefits from a second viewing (if you dare). In essence this film is about how loneliness became a black boy's coping mechanism and how it hindered his surrender to love in adulthood. Chiron, the protagonist is beaten up by classmates and life in Florida projects. He keeps his head stooped, the alienation tightening around him whether it's his crack head mother, derelict father, or his adult friend who by proxy sells Chiron's mother drugs. Years later Chiron himself lives hard but upon a reunion moves past the walls he built around him. Broken hearts along with family and community disintegration is not an entertaining way to spend an evening, but this film (w/o qualifying why I believe it's accurate) is a story no bumper sticker, yard sign or sports player is willing to address. However Moonlight also shows us hope and forgiveness. Hope and forgiveness are always in the best of stories.

Tons of quotes in IMDb already but this one was unexpected and shocking:

You the only man that's ever touched me. You're the only one. I haven't really touched anyone since.

“I was a wild little shortie, man. Just like you. Running around with no shoes on, the moon was out. This one time, I run by this old lady. I was running, howling. Kinda a fool, boy. This old lady, she stopped me. She said, “Running around, catching a lot of light. In moonlight, black boys look blue. You're blue. That's what I’m gonna call you: ‘Blue’.”
“Is your name 'Blue’?”
“Nah. At some point, you gotta decide for yourself who you’re going to be. Can’t let nobody make that decision for you.”
