Roland Smith really is one of the best authors for books that boys won't want to put down. In Zach's Lie he once again keeps the pages turning and the reader perched on the edge of their chair. Jack is having a rough time. His dad is in jail and to make matters much, much worse he and his family are terrified one night when men break into their home and threaten their lives while tossing everything in the house. What is happening? He loves his dad and can't believe all the bad stuff he's hearing about him. It turns out that his dad is going to be a witness against some big drug dealers and is in protective custody. Now Jack and his mom and sister have to go into the Witness Security Program for safety. The move is rough on everyone. They all have to change their names, memorize new life histories and they can never tell anyone the truth or the bad guys could find them. Jack becomes Zach and starts living a lie to stay alive. But when you're making new friends what do you tell them? All lies. But it's not easy to keep such a big secret and eventually something is going to slip out. Written wonderfully by Roland Smith (Thunder Cave) this book has a fabulously intense finish. I found myself saying "Oh, no! Ooooohhhh, NOOOO!" and couldn't put it down. Jack's Run is the next book about Jack's continuing story. And guess what, things get even crazier! Action and adventure at its best for boys ages 9 - 13.
